Swami Interview

Please introduce all members of your band and tell us since when are you guys doing music?

Diamond: Hi, people know me as DJ Swami and I am the producer and DJ in the group Swami. I also play guitar, keys, drums and vocal talkbox…
S-Endz: I provide the rap fire and the energy to keep the party rocking, Sups sings in both Punjabi and English, Bobby P is a dhol monster, and Liana is our new featured female vocalist, she takes our live show to a new dimension!

Your music has a very unique style with electric and rock sounds mixed up with Punjabi vocals. How did you find your way to this music style and what kind of music have you been making before?

Diamond: I listen to everything! I like songs and ideas if they are original regardless of style. I grew up playing guitar so rock was a natural influence. I also played in reggae bands, jazz groups as well as pop acts…I suppose Djing and dance music had a large part to play in the electronic influences.
S-Endz: We try to never do the same thing twice. No two Swami albums sound alike. Of course, you can trace the progression. We wouldn’t sound the way we do without having done the stuff we’ve done before.

Have you already released your album “Equalize” in India? Your recent press release says you were going to put different tracks on the Indian album than on the one released in UK. What is/are the reasons for this?

Diamond: The album was released on EMI Virgin India at the beginning of 2008. There are a few different versions of the tracks for India and Asia. We featured Swedish pop star Dede Lopez on Electro Jugni for the Asia release as well as a Tigerstyle remix of Hey Hey. We like to give people something new other than what they have already seen or heard on the Internet…

Swami: Hey Hey (Album: Equalize)

When did you get in touch wit EMI and how do you feel about working with a major label?

Diamond: We have been in discussions with EMI for about six months…they are a great label to work with and are committed to promoting Swami throughout India. We have worked with major labels before in India and we are very focused on what is required from the relationship.

You have already performed a couple of times in Germany, are there any album or single releases planned for this market or any other European country (apart of UK)?

Diamond: We love playing in Germany! I suppose there is something exotic about our sound to the German audiences…We are currently licensing Equalize to release in different territories across Europe…France is imminent and Germany is potentially next.

How did you feel, when doing your first gig in Heidelberg/Germany in may 2005?

Diamond: I honestly did not know what to expect…I was pleasantly surprised to see so many people come down and really get into the DJ show…seems like there are a lot of open-minded party people around here..

Tell us something about your performance in Berlin last September. It is very unusual for Germany to have two or more desi acts in the same festival.

Diamond: I think there were a few desi acts on at the festival which was a great idea…it gave a good range of desi influenced acts for the true desi fans and those that wanna learn more…we actually had Boostylz from NYC who features on Hey Hey with us for a unique performance..
S-Endz: We had a great time in Berlin! The venue was awesome and the crowd were really into it.

There is a trend of putting remixes on Bollywood soundtracks. Do you guys have any plans to create your own remixes for a hindi soundtrack, thinking about your experience with the ‘Pure Garage series’?

Diamond: We actually did a track for the Bollywood movie ‘Corporate’ last year, but I would much prefer to do something totally original for Bollywood..

What can we expect from your gig in Heidelberg? Any special tracks you will perform for the Bombay Boogie Night (Birthday Bash No. 5)?

S-Endz: You’ll have to wait and see! You can expect some serious desi rockin electro funk madness!

What are your Future plans?

Diamond: To make great music…
S-Endz: To Equalize the entire planet…!

What is your message for the Happyindia.de Users?
